What you'll learn in this expert session
There is a recognised need to ensure pregnant women receive adequate vitamin D, but the evidence on how to do so is mixed. This presentation will outline, according to the current knowledge base, how to adopt a holistic approach to ensuring adequate vitamin d intake tailored to individual patients, using a combination of the sources of sunlight, diet, and supplementation.
Learning Objectives:
- Know the population groups most at risk of inadequate vitamin D during pregnancy, and how to effectively screen patients
- Be aware of the required amount of sunlight to ensure adequate vitamin D, as well as types of patients unlikely to receive it
- Identify food types that are rich in vitamin D, and the limitations of vitamin D intake from diet
- Understand how to use vitamin D supplements safely and effectively during pregnancy
