Pregnancy and breast feeding place extra demands on maternal mineral homeostasis. To ensure adequate maternal well-being and fetal development it is important to ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake during pregnancy and in the post-partum period. In this presentation the role of calcium and vitamin D in pregnancy will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the role of vitamin D in the human body
- Recognise the impact of vitamin D deficiency in infants
- Know the effects of vitamin D deficiency on both pregnant women and infants
- Optimally use and interpret serum vitamin D testing
- Determine the optimal vitamin D therapy required to treat vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy and newborns
About the Expert
Dr Therese McGee
Dr Therese McGee is currently Clinical Director of Women’s and Newborn Health at Westmead Hospital with responsibility for over 500 staff. She trained as a specialist Obstetrician Gynaecologist and has worked across both the private and public sectors.
She is particularly interested in trying to make sure that clinical care for women and newborn babies is safe, evidence-based and cost-effective. To achieve this she is involved in creating up to date practices & guidelines, and providing education for medical and midwifery staff.
