Spring is the season for allergy in Australia and unfortunately it is also the time of greatest risk for thunderstorm asthma. In this presentation, Dr Celia Zubrinich, Allergy Specialist, covers the underlying mechanism of thunderstorm asthma, the extent of the problem, who is at risk and, importantly, the practical ways in which patients can plan ahead and minimise this risk.

About the Expert

Dr Celia Zubrinich

Celia Zubrinich is a Consultant Physician with a special interest in all aspects of allergy, particularly food, drug, and venom allergies. She remains actively involved in clinical research at the Alfred Hospital and sees adults and adolescents aged 16 years or older in her practice. Dr Celia Zubrinich obtained her medical degree with First Class Honours from Monash University and completed her training across Melbourne teaching hospitals, achieving fellowship of the RACP in 2006. She later undertook a clinical research fellowship at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada. Dr Zubrinich has completed dedicated allergy fellowship training at the Alfred Hospital Allergy and Asthma Unit, where she continues to consult. She is a member of the Alfred Health Adverse Drug Reactions Committee, an investigator in clinical trials, and a contributor to teaching within the unit. Her contributions extend to national initiatives such as the National Allergy Strategy, and she is a member of the ASCIA Allergen Immunotherapy Working Party. Additionally, she is part of a new collaboration, the Australian Registry of Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions (AUS-SCAR). Dr Zubrinich is also involved in clinical research through the Monash University School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine Masters Program. She is a current fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and a member of the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA), the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ), the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), and the American Thoracic Society (ATS)
