As the population ages, more and more patients are actively seeking advice as to how they can protect themselves against the risk of dementia. In this course, A/Prof Woodward will present the latest evidence-based recommendations on how people can preserve their cognitive function as they age, and slow the progression to dementia.
Learning Objectives:
- Analyse the case study and recognise early cognitive decline and dementia signs
- Summarise the pathogenic mechanisms and stages of Alzheimer’s disease
- Identify the risk factors and protective factors for cognitive decline
- Refer at risk patients for early assessment and initiation of cognitive resilience interventions to reduce cognitive decline and preserve function
About the Expert
A/Prof Michael Woodward
Michael is Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne and is the senior consultant at Austin Health with a major interest in health promotion, including vaccine-preventable illnesses, especially in older people. He was awarded the Membership of the Order of Australia in 2016 for success as a writer and researcher in geriatric medicine. He is author of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Geriatric Medicine position document on vaccination of older adults.
