What you'll learn in this expert session

Are sleep problems a trigger or a consequence of depression? Does treating one help the other or should they be treated as two separate conditions? These are just some of the questions that psychiatrist and sleep expert, Dr Chris Blackwell, addresses as he presents the latest evidence on the interplay between these two conditions and outlines a practical approach to their assessment and management.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognise the reciprocal relationship between sleep and depressive disorders
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of depression
  • Outline sleep phenotypes, the sleep stages and circadian rhythm
  • Apply current practical, psychological and pharmacological treatments for depression and concomitant sleep disturbances
