What you'll learn in this expert session

The national Shingles vaccination strategy continues to develop. Recently, Healthed surveyed more than 1,000 GPs to understand their major questions about the vaccination program. This is the first instalment of answers to those questions, provided by an expert who is directly involved in the initiative.

  • Outline the complications and treatments for Herpes Zoster infection
  • Compare the effectiveness and safety profiles of Zostavax and Shingrix
  • Recommend vaccination against Herpes Zoster as per the ATAGI guidelines


About the Expert

A/Prof John Litt

A/Prof John Litt AM is a retired academic GP and public health physician in the Discipline of General Practice at Flinders University, and was the Deputy Chairman of the National Quality Committee of the RACGP (from 2000-2018). His major clinical and research interests are in prevention and its implementation. He conducted the first Australian National Influenza and Pneumococcal survey in older adults in 1998 and the first Australian Zoster Attitudes and Beliefs survey in older persons and GPs in 2009. More recently he helped to develop a COVID Risk calculator (CoRiCal), an online risk-benefit tool, that can help GPs assist patients in deciding to have a COVID vaccine.
