This presentation explores iron management in pregnancy, discusses iron requirements in the perinatal period of pregnancy, the consequences of iron deficiency, how to dose oral iron in pregnancy and when and how to escalate to intravenous iron.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand what the recommended dietary intake of iron is for women and how these requirements change during pregnancy
- Discuss the Iron requirements in perinatal period and recommended intake
- Describe the different consequences of iron deficiency in all women and pregnant women
- Discuss oral iron supplementation for pregnant women in regards to dose, formulation and side effects
- Identify the effects of intravenous iron and when it may be required
About the Expert
Dr Renee Eslick
Dr Renee Eslick is a clinical and laboratory haematologist in Western Sydney. She has a special interest in obstetric haematology and completed an international fellowship in the area. She is the founding member of Haematology in Obstetrics and Women's Health (HOW) Collaborative and has an active research interest in thrombocytopenia in pregnancy. She is also passionate about teaching and is the Director of Physician Education at Liverpool Hospital.
