What you'll learn in this expert session
The focus on Pertussis prevention is usually on infants and children as it is this serious disease which can be life-threatening for them. Despite Pertussis being vaccine preventable with very good vaccine-uptake in infants and young children, its ongoing prevalence in the community and waves of epidemic continue to be a threat to this group. As a strategy to protect the most vulnerable, Dr Eizenberg shifts the attention to preventing infection in adults by raising awareness and promoting more regular adult immunisations.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognise the toll that the ongoing prevalence of Pertussis takes on our society and identify the most at-risk cohorts
- Determine the gaps in immunisation coverage, diagnostic and treatment pathways in effectively containing and managing Pertussis in the community
- Identify the adults in the community that should have Pertussis vaccines
- Recommend, schedule and administer Pertussis vaccinations to people outside of the government funded immunisation program
