What you'll learn in this expert session
Meningococcal disease is a serious and preventable cause of death and disability in children. Where funded immunisations have greatly reduced the prevalence of certain strains around the world, there is still cause for concern in Australia with limited Meningococcal B vaccine coverage. This talk outlines the epidemiology of the different strains of Meningococcal disease in Australia, identifies at-risk population groups and elucidates recommendations for disease prevention.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the prevalence of the different Neisseria meningitidis serogroups in Australia
- Recognise population groups at-risk of Meningococcal infection
- Review the National Immunisation Program (NIP)
- Recommend the timely administration of important vaccines that are not yet on the NIP
