Neurodevelopmental disorders are increasingly common, often first presenting in primary care. This presentation will outline a practical approach to assessing children ages 5 to 12 using the Emerging Minds model. It includes tips on effective communication, establishing a developmental history, understanding when development is abnormal, planning for the various psychosocial needs and establishing a collaborative management team tailored to the specific needs of the child.
About the Expert
Dr Andrew Leech
Dr Andrew Leech is a General Practitioner in Perth, Western Australia. He is an advisor to Emerging Minds, part of the National Workforce to improve paediatric mental health awareness and training of health professionals in Australia. He advises and presents mental health training sessions for the RACGP. Dr Leech also works for Headspace Fremantle, consulting young people between the ages of 12 to 25. He trains future doctors at the Notre Dame Medical School and registrars at WAGPET. In 2020, he was selected to take part in the RACGP Future Leaders Program and this year is on a WA Health Department Ministerial Taskforce for the Mental Health Commission of WA.
