This presentation will address the prevalence, reasons and management of female genital mutilation and cutting. Culturally sensitive approaches to discussing this condition will be covered, as well as available resources and effective interventions.

- Understand the definition of female genital mutilation and cutting
- Gain awareness of the prevalence of and reasons for FGM/C, worldwide and within Australia
- Identify the types of FGM/C
- Assess the immediate, intermediate, intermediate, and long-term health consequences
- Discuss the pregnancy outcomes resulting from FGM/C
- Reflect on unconscious bias or assumptions, particularly regarding history taking and provision of care
- Gain awareness of effective surgical and public health interventions
- Understand the legal ramifications
About the Expert
Dr Jill Benson AM
Dr Jill Benson AM has been a GP for over 40 years. She has worked in refugee health for the last 20 years at the Migrant Health Service. She was part of the national group who wrote the ‘Guidelines for the Diagnosis, Management and Prevention of Infection in Recently Arrived Refugees’, has written a book entitled ‘Mental Health Across Cultures’ and is a founding member of the Refugee Health Network of Australia (RHeaNA). In 2012 she was awarded an Order of Australia for her work with refugees, Aboriginal people and in the field of mental health.
