Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is the most common perinatal endocrine condition affecting up to 10% of pregnancies in Australia. It is recommended that dietary interventions focus on optimal energy prescription, carbohydrate balance, nutrient quality and the appropriate use of medical nutrition therapy.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the aetiology of gestational diabetes and the identify the risk of subsequent Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
- Recognise diet as the principal treatment for gestational diabetes, classify the carbohydrates (CHO), macro and micro nutrients content of common foods
- Determine appropriate amounts and types of food to optimise nutritional and energy intake for women and their growing foetus, including identification of required supplements
- When to refer patients and collaborate with a dietician to support patients diagnosed with gestational diabetes with dietary management.
About the Expert
Susie Burrell
Susie Burrell is one of Australia’s leading dietitians, with 2 Honours degrees in Nutrition & Dietetics and Psychology. Susie is especially known for her practical, easy to understand approach to diet, nutrition and wellbeing. Early in her career, she spent almost 10 years working at The Children’s Hospital and with elite sporting teams including the St George Illawarra Dragons and the South African Blue Bulls where she gained much applied experience working with children, families and elite athletes. Susie is currently the resident sports dietitian at Sydney University Sport.
