Depression is one of the most common symptoms of menopause. In this presentation, Prof Jayashri Kulkarni outlines a systematic approach to the assessment, investigation and treatment of the middle-aged woman presenting with depression. She will also include information about the natural history of mental illness at this time of life and how health practitioners can determine what treatment should take priority.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognise the correlation between hormonal changes in the perimenopause period and the marked increase in rates of depression in women at this time
- Identify the distinctive symptoms that characterise perimenopausal depression
- Evaluate menopause hormone therapy, antidepressant medications, natural remedies and psychotherapy as treatment pathways to address the multifactorial nature of the condition
- Assess patient symptoms and determine benefits, risks and side-effects of treatments targeting the patients’ symptoms
About the Expert
Prof Jayashri Kulkarni
Professor Jayashri Kulkarni commenced her appointment as Professor of Psychiatry, The Alfred and Monash University in 2002. She directs a large psychiatric research group, the Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre (MAPrc), with approximately 150 staff and students. The Centre is dedicated to discovering new treatments, new understanding and new services for people with a range of mental illnesses.
