Iron deficiency in heart failure is not only common but represents a serious risk factor for poorer outcomes. More and more evidence points to a significant association between iron deficiency and heart failure. In this presentation, A/Prof Ingrid Hopper details the latest understanding of the link between these two conditions including the prevalence of iron deficiency in heart failure, why it occurs and the reasons why it is important to treat. She will also present the recommendations for treatment which are not as straightforward as many people would imagine.

About the Expert
A/Prof Ingrid Hopper
A/Prof Hopper completed her physician training at Alfred Hospital and then a PhD in heart failure therapeutics, specifically medication withdrawal in patients with polypharmacy. She was awarded the Mollie Holman medal for best thesis in the Monash University Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, and was a finalist in the Victorian Premier’s Prize for Health and Medical Research. Her research formed a practice recommendation in the Australian Heart Failure guidelines 2018.
