Healthy eating habits and maintaining a healthy weight in early life are crucial for ongoing wellbeing, yet rates of childhood overweight and obesity remain stubbornly high in Australia. Healthcare professionals can be effective advocates for healthy eating in childhood, but the advice they give needs to be simple, be grounded in improving satiety and generally target the whole family. This presentation relates the quickest and easiest dietary changes families can make in order to manage weight, as well as when to involve a dietitian and how to implement very low energy diets for adolescents.
Learning Objectives:
- Know the current state of childrens’ dietary habits in Australia, particularly consistent problem areas and groups most at risk of overweight
- Identify ‘quick wins’ in terms of family-wide dietary changes that can be suggested during a short consult
- Learn the appropriate use and implementation of very low energy diets in adolescence
- Understand when to refer cases to a specialists
About the Expert
Alicia Grunseit
Alicia Grunseit is an APD with over 15 years’ experience in Paediatric Dietetics. She has a keen interest in childhood and adolescent obesity, in particular insulin resistance, PCOS and adolescent weight management. Alicia has been involved in setting up and running obesity treatment programs for both children and adolescents in the UK as well as part of her role as weight management dietitian at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
