Vaccinating adults against infectious diseases is vital if we want to improve people's healthspan as well as their lifespan.
Diseases such as the flu, RSV, pertussis and pneumococcal disease are associated with significant morbidity in older people and are all vaccine preventable. In this presentation, A/Prof Michael Woodward AM outlines the need for preventing these diseases as well as the effectiveness and limitations of the currently available vaccines, and the challenges associated with getting this population optimally protected.
About the Expert
A/Prof Michael Woodward AM
A/Prof Michael Woodward AM is a Geriatrician with a passion for health promotion in older people, including vaccine-preventable diseases. He is Director of Aged Care Research at Austin Health and has conducted several trials of vaccines. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Immunization Coalition and has written the Position Paper on Immunization of older people for the Australian and New Zealand Society of Geriatric Medicine. In 2016 he received Membership of the Order of Australia for his work in geriatric medicine and his communication to professionals.
